The safety of a horse herd depends on heavily on the structure or hierarchy of the herd. Horses fall somewhere along the spectrum between passive and aggressive, with the exception of the lead mare. Rank is determined by who moves their feet to gives up space, which a passive horse will gladly do to get out of the more dominant horse’s way. The closer two horses are in rank the more likely there will be some scrapping to get it sorted out.
Here you have a dominant horse in the rear who definitely wants the front horse to move. From the look on his face and the tuck of his butt, there’s a pretty good bite to that nip!
